We hear about them all the time. “Overnight Successes”. A person or company who, seemingly, explodes in popularity overnight. Maybe it’s a YouTube star who goes viral and get 10 million views. Or maybe it’s a stay-at-home mum whose cake business stops being a side-business.
Here’s the thing. There’s no such thing as an overnight success. People may experience the results all at once so it seems like an overnight success, but the reality is that there is years of work behind every overnight success.
My business partner Michael summed it up nicely when he said “An overnight success needs twenty years of preparation.”
You can argue that the YouTube star got lucky that his video went viral. But if that YouTube star wasn’t putting out a video every single day even though nobody was watching them, he never would have been in a position for a video to go viral.
If the stay at home mum hadn’t spent her spare time for years mastering how to bake an amazing cake, nobody would be willing to pay for hers, and she wouldn’t have a business at all.
If you want to know the secret that leads to success, here it is, free of charge: consistent effort. The most successful people are those who are willing to commit to the daily grind. Those who are willing to do what it takes.
You need to make the actions that lead to your success a habit. They need to become part of your daily life so that every day you’re closer to achieving those goals.
Let’s use fitness as an example. If you only go the gym once a week and spend the entire time looking at Facebook instead of working out, you aren’t going to get the washboard abs you wish you had. On the other hand, if you went to the gym five times a week and pushed yourself as hard as you could go every single time, you’d have abs in no time.
Don’t rely on ‘luck’ to become an overnight success. Learn to love the actions that lead to your result, and make them a daily habit. If you do that, it becomes impossible to not succeed.
